What is Capital Punishment?

Also known as the Death Penalty or Execution, is the killing of a person by judicial process for retribution and incapacitation. Capital punishment has been practiced in virtually every society, excluding those with state religious proscriptions against it. It is a matter of active controversy in various states, and positions can vary within a single ideology or cultural region. A major exception is in Europe, where Article 2 (Everyone has the right to live, No one shall be condemned to the death penalty or executed) of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union prohibits the practice.

Most countries are considered by Non-Governmental Organizations such as Amnesty International as abolitionists which follow votes on  nonbinding resolutions to the UN to promote the abolition of the Death Penalty. In most places that practice capital punishment it is reserved for murder, espionage, treason, or as part of military justice. In Iran, sexual crimes, such as rape, adultery, incest, and sodomy, carry the death penalty, as do religious crimes such as apostacy in Islamic Nations.

Some severe penalties include breaking wheel, boiling to death, flaying, slow slicing, disembowelment, crucifixion, impalement, crushing (including crushing by an elephant), stoning, execution by burning, dismemberment, sawing, decapitation, scaphism, or necklacing.

Class Project

Welcome to Stop The Death Penalty.wordpress.com! This website was made to showcase the extensive research of Arieana, Kevin, and Janeal. Together we attend Columbia College Chicago and are taking the class Human Rights. For our final project, we are researching the Death Penalty in Iran in comparison with the United States Death Penalty. Feel free to comment  and post ideas to how we can enhance our research findings. If you are interested in joining the movement to stop the death penalty in our country please contact Amnesty International on their website:amnestyinternational.com and Campaign to End the Death Penalty(CEDP)  @ WWW.nodeathpenalty.org to see what you can do to prevent these heinous events.
